Double Fatal – Knox County

(Union) – Authorities say a 17-year old Litchfield boy who died in a crash in Union had received a speeding ticket Saturday night in Rockport an hour before the crash, and the same officer who ticketed him tried to pull him over again for speeding. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department identified the driver as Caleb Byras. He and 16-year old Kara Brewer of Rockland died in the wreck on Wotton’s Mill Road in Union late Saturday night. Another teen in the car survived.

Wreaths Across America
(Ellsworth) – An estimated thousand people crowded into the Maine Coast Mall parking lot yesterday as the Wreaths Across America convoy stopped to honor veterans who died in service to their country.
The huge tractor trailer trucks full of wreaths from Worcestor Wreath Company got an escort from dozens of fire trucks and police cars from across Maine and through Ellsworth. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Susan Farley reminded the crowd of the mission. The wreaths should arrive in Washington DC by next weekend.


Sidney Fatal
(Sidney) – A 53-year old woman from Jay is dead after a crash in Sidney yesterday afternoon. State Police tell Star 97.7 Sherry Turner got onto the wrong side of the road on Route 27 in Sidney at about 1-thirty yesterday afternoon when she crashed into an oncoming pickup truck. Turner died in the crash – her vehicle caught fire in the crash. Rescue workers pulled an 8-year old child from the burning vehicle, who is expected to survive after the Life Flight helicopter transported the child to a Portland hospital. One of the two men in the other truck suffered broken bones.

Benton Fatal
(Benton) – An accident in Benton has left a 35-year old man dead. WABI-TV reports Joseph Defazio was in one of two cars that hit head on yesterday afternoon on the Unity Road. A passing motorist used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire that started after the crash. Police say speed and intoxicants were likely factors in the crash.


Hancock Crash
(Hancock) – A Jonesport man faces OUI charges after he rear ended a vehicle on Route 1 in Hancock this weekend, causing firefighters to shut down the busy road for about an hour. The crash Saturday afternoon occurred near the White Birches Motel. Deputies charged 39-year old Clifton Emerson of Jonesport. The crash caused a small pickup truck to roll over, but the operator was able to get out on his own. Firefighters from Hancock, Lamoine and Sullivan re-routed traffic while the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office investigated.


Voigts books picked by Obamas
(Deer Isle) A Deer Isle author is apparently a favorite of the Obama family. CNN released a list of books President Barack Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia picked up on Small Business Saturday at a local bookstore in Washington D.C. On the list are three books by Cynthia Voigt. Her “Kingdom Series” was among the picks by the Obamas along with six other books. Voigt was the only author to sell three books to the Obamas.
