Suspicious Package
(Warren) – Authorities closed off the entrance to a public park off Route 90 in Warren late yesterday afternoon and into the night after someone found a suspicious package. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the State Fire Marshal’s office was called in and said an incendiary device might be inside. No reports of any injury or whether the package has been detonated.

Softball Coach Charged
(Searsport) – A former softball coach at Searsport High School faces sexual exploitation charges. The Bangor Daily News reports the Searsport Police Department arrested 34-year old Matthew Cox of Stockton Springs following an investigation that lasted several months. Officers say the charge involves a 16-year old girl, and they seized computer and cell phone records that included pictures.

Power Plant Suit
(Bucksport) – The bankrupt owners of a power plant in Bucksport are suing General Electric for not maintaining equipment at the plant. The Bangor Daily News reports Bucksport Generation LLC claims GE did not perform the required maintenance to keep the plant operating. GE Claims the company owes them $15-million dollars, and had they not gone into bankruptcy, they would have sued the power plant.

Portland teacher charged with child porn
(Portland) State Police say a Portland high school teacher faces child porn charges after police received a tip. Troopers from the Computer Crimes unit arrested 44 year old Gerald White of Freeport at the school Wednesday morning. He’s charged with possessing sexually explicit material of someone under the age of 12. Police say White is an art teacher at Portland High. They don’t believe any of the images found on his computer are of Maine children.

Martha Stewart buys property
(Mount Desert) Martha Stewart has added to her property in Seal Harbor purchased an 8 acre lot on Ox Hill next to her summer home. According to a deed filed at the Hancock County registry of deeds, Stewart purchased the Ox Ledge property and garden in November. The property was listed with an asking price of 5.8 million dollars. The 68-hundred square foot Ox Ledge has 17 rooms.

Senior Housing Survey results
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth city officials have a better idea about what older folks want for housing. Consultant Bruce Mayberry told the City Council about 800 senior housing surveys were returned and folks aged 55 and older want single family homes, in the 200 to 250 thousand dollar price range that are modestly sized and close to necessary services. City councilors praised the survey saying it will be used by many to make decisions on projects in Ellsworth.

MCMH penalized by Medicare
(Ellsworth) Maine Coast Memorial Hospital is among 758 hospitals nationally penalized by Medicare for high patient infection rates. Kaiser Health reports the hospitals will face a one percent penalty on all Medicare payments through September 2016. Hospital officials tell Star 97.7, that equates to about 70 thousand dollars in penalties for Maine Coast. Chief Nursing Officer Ardelle Bigos says the data used in the assessment is from between July 2012 and June 2014. Kaiser Health says the penalties are based on the government’s assessment of the frequency of several kinds of infections, sepsis, hip fractures and other complications.

Penobscot River Ruling

(Bangor) – Three and a half years ago, hunters and fishermen along the main stem of the Penobscot River started getting tickets from the Penobscot Indian Nation. The charge? The tribe claimed the river is part of their reservation and folks using it were barred from it. A federal judge has told the tribe: NO. Judge George Singal ruled the river belongs to all of the public, and is not part of the Indian Island reservation. Attorney General Janet Mills tells Star 97.7 the ruling was correct.

The University of Maine has named Joe Harasymiak as the new head football coach. He was the defensive coordinator last season under Jack Cosgrove
