Big Rig Fires
(Scarborough) – It was no coincidence. That’s the word from investigators looking into a pair of fires at a trucking company that has yards in Scarborough and Poland. The two fires destroyed more than $750-thousand dollars worth of big rigs owned by R.C. Moore Trucking. The large company has four facilities in Maine and more out of state. The Fire Marshal’s office has called in help from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms to look for the cause and who might have set the fires. They’re reviewing video surveillance at the truck facilities.
Holden Phone Scam
(Holden) – Police in Holden say phone scammers have become more sophisticated, even using a fake caller ID to try to trick people. WABI-TV reports police received a complaint that her called ID showed the call coming from the Holden Police Department, so she answered then hung up when a person with a foreign accent started talking about a loan. Police chief Chris Greeley says phone scammers continue to get more sophisticated with ways to try to trick people out of money.
(Bangor) – Quick response by Bangor Firefighters kept a small shed fire from spreading to a nearby home. The call to Jefferson Street came in around 4-o’clock yesterday afternoon. Firefighters found the shed ablaze and quickly doused the flames. Heat from the fire melted siding on the main house. No immediate word on what caused the shed to catch fire.
Bugaboo Creek Fire
(South Portland) – Fire has destroyed a vacant restaurant that was up for sale in South Portland. Newscenter 6 reports an electrical problem likely started the blaze at the former Bugaboo Creek Restaurant. Smoke was pouring from the front of the building when firefighters arrived yesterday afternoon. High ceilings gave plenty of room for the flames to spread inside the closed restaurant. Bugaboo Creek shut down abruptly last year and was up for sale.
(Rockland) – The agency coordinating a search for a new city manager in Rockland says only 23 people have applied for the job. Maine Municipal Association had hoped for 30-to-40 applicants, but they will narrow down the field to a few to interview further. The position opened almost a year ago when former manager James Chaousis stepped down amid a series of controversies. Assistant City Manager Audra Caler Bell has been running Rockland since he stepped down. No word on whether she’s applied for the top job.
