New China Hill Fire

(Ellsworth) – The former Hilltop House restaurant that was undergoing renovations in Ellsworth to become the new China Hill went up in flames overnight. Ellsworth Fire Chief Richard Tupper tells Star 97-7 a passing motorist spotted the flames as he passed the building on Kingsland Crossing at about 10:30 last night. Help came to Ellsworth from Hancock, Trenton, Lamoine, Franklin and Dedham. Chief Tupper says they had to use an excavator that was on scene to pull down walls to get to the fire which continues to smolder. The fire marshal’s office will look for the cause later today.

Weather

(Ellsworth) – If you have school aged children or teach, you’ve got a couple extra hours to kill this morning. Most Hancock County schools delayed opening for two hours after rain turned to snow overnight and left the roads a slushy and very slippery mess. Plow trucks hit the road at about 4-o’clock this morning. Police reported cars had a tough time making it up steep hills while others slid off the road.

Drug Dealer Arrested

(Old Town) – Police posing as a drug buyer sent a text message to a 22-year old South Portland man wanting to get some Xanax. When Nicholas Whitten showed up to meet the texter near a school in Old Town, he had 25-pills with him. The buyer had handcuffs. Captain Lee Miller tells Star 97-7 they’ve charged Whitten with aggravated drug trafficking and a search of his home turned up 170-more Xanax pills and $920 in cash.

Tax Collector Sentenced
(Portland) – A woman who swiped more than $100-thousand dollars in property tax payments from the City of Westbrook will have 6-months in jail to think about her actions. Then 52-year old Ann Marie Williams will be on supervised release for 3-years and will have to pay Westbrook back the money. The US Attorney’s Office tells Star 97-7 that Williams would pocket cash tax payments then cook the books to make it look like people had paid.

Border Crosser Sentenced
(Bangor) – An Ohio man who crossed the US/Canadian border near Calais at a point other than a crossing checkpoint will return back home. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97-7 that 27-year old Rocky Allen Resides was sentenced to time served. The border patrol spotted Resides walking on Route 1 in Calais on Sunday. He illegally entered Canada last July and did not return to the US through a border crossing point.
