(West Forks) – A commercial raft floating down the Dead River hit rapids Saturday and flipped over, dumping all 7-people on board into the raging river. Six came back up – 67-year old Richard Sanders did not. When he finally did surface, the guide and civilians got him to shore and tried to revive him. The Warden Service tells Star 97-7 those efforts did not succeed. They’re continuing their investigation into the accident, noting that Sanders wore a lifejacket and helmet.
Disabled Boat Towed
(Northeast Harbor) – All the people aboard a sport fishing boat based in Northeast Harbor are OK after the Coast Guard had to tow them to shore this weekend. The Coast Guard tells Star 97.7 the 28-foot Jammie Dodger hit a submerged object off Bear Island and radioed they were taking on water Saturday afternoon. A 47-foot rescue boat from Southwest Harbor reached the Jammie Dodger and towed it to a pier in Somesville where it awaits repair.
(Rockland) – A midcoast fishing captain accused of killing two crewman on board his boat that sank will go on trial in November. Village Soup dot-com reports 28-year old Christopher Hutchinson is still recovering from a heroin overdose where officers revived him using Narcan. Hutchinson’s federal trial on seaman’s manslaughter charges will now begin November 1st. The sinking in November 2014 killed Tom Hammond and Tyler Sawyer when they went down with the boat.
(Coastal ME) It’s been nearly a decade since Maine experienced any sort of hurricane impact. In September 2008 Hurricane Kyle passed us on its way to Canada bringing heavy rain and winds that caused scattered power outages and dropped more than 7 inches of rain in Hancock County. Local Emergency Management Agency director Andrew Sankey says now that it’s hurricane season there’s no cause for alarm, but residents can make preparations.
(Augusta) Augusta police got a tip and pulled over a Portland man with a car full of drugs. Patrol officers stopped the car on Winter Street at 2AM last Thursday and found the driver, Preston Cooper, was operating with a suspended license. A search of the car turned up 30 grams of heroin. 52-year-old Cooper charged with Aggravated Trafficking, Unlawful Possession of Scheduled Drugs, and Sale and Use of Drug Paraphernalia. Bail was set at 60-thousand-dollars cash.
(Brewer) Brewer Community School has eliminated its full-time school resource officer. The proposed school budget was presented to Brewer City Council last week with the change. The Brewer Police Department reports beginning this fall only one officer will oversee both the Brewer Community School and Brewer High School.
Ranked Choice Voting
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Maine lawmakers are considering either repealing or allowing the new ranked-choice voting law that Mainers approved in November. The state’s high court recently issued a non-binding opinion that the method is unconstitutional when it comes to elections for governor and state lawmakers. Democratic Sen. Cathy Breen said lawmakers should uphold the people’s will and introduced a bill Friday for a constitutional amendment allowing the method. Republican Rep. Heather Sirocki’s bill would repeal the law.
