Drug Bust – Cherryfield
(Cherryfield) – Early yesterday morning drug agents burst into a Cherryfield home with search warrant in hand. They came away with crack and heroin and about $11-thousand in cash as well as two men charged with aggravated drug trafficking. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency reports to Star 97.7 that they took 31-year old Kevin Robinson of Cherryfield and 22-year old Jean Carlos Mena-Vera of Ecuador to the Washington County jail. Agents had been investigating Robinson since June.
Missing Woman Found
(Orland) – A worker at the fish hatchery in Orland spotted a woman who was reported as missing and detained her yesterday until police could arrive. That ended an ordeal for 56-year old Aza Jerome Vasylyk who fled from her burning home more than a week ago. Family members tell the Bangor Daily News that the Ukraine native was most likely distraught about the fire. Investigators have not determined how the fire started. The woman’s husband was arrested at the fire scene when he tried to go inside the burning house to look for his wife.
(Local) A new study finds more kids in Maine are smoking or consuming marijuana than youth in most other states. The study released last month by the US Drug Test Centers says kids ages 12 to 17 in Maine rank third in the nation for pot consumption behind Vermont and Oregon. Healthy Acadia spokeswoman Tara Young says some Maine youth have easier access to marijuana and edibles when parents fail to safely store the products out of sight. (Ellsworth) A local woman has been received a prestigious honor from the Maine Insurance Agents Association. JT Rosborough Agency manager Ashley Rosborough has received the Young Insurance Professional of the Year Award. She’s been in the business for about 9 years and is a third generation in a family run agency. Ashley is a member and past president of the Insurance Professionals of Downeast Maine, and she’s a board member of the Downeast Family YMCA. The accolade is given to a person under the age of 40 who’s employed by an MIAA member agency.
Hospice Myths Debunked
(Ellsworth) A discussion at the Ellsworth Public Library aims to debunk common myths about hospice. Northern Light Home Care & Hospice medical professionals along with representatives from Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County will share information about how hospice services go far beyond what some people realize. Attendees will also learn about other hospice services like assistance with Advance Care Directives and bereavement support for families. The free discussion is this Thursday evening at 6 in the Riverview Room at the Ellsworth Public Library.
(Augusta) Maine’s unemployment rate is approaching four years of remaining at very low levels. The Maine Department of Labor says the unemployment rate for October was 2.8%. That’s down from 2.9% in August and September. The state’s unemployment rate has been below 4% for 46 consecutive months. Unemployment is low around the country and especially low in New England. The nationwide rate was 3.6% in October, and New England’s rate was 3%.
(Brunswick) – A fatal shooting at a Brunswick shelter complex will not result in charges according to State Police. A spokesman reports to Star 97.7 that 40-year old Ali Fisher of Lisbon broke into a room at the Tedford complex and got into an altercation with a 22-year old woman and a 22-year old man who was visiting her. Both the guest and Fisher had guns, and the unnamed guest shot Fisher who died. The guest also sustained a gunshot wound to an arm and was treated and released from a nearby hospital.
Coffee with Constituents
(Ellsworth) State Representative Nicole Grohoski will resume her “Coffee With Constituents” gathering. It’s a chance for locals to meet with the representative for Ellsworth and Trenton to discuss any concerns. The casual gathering over coffee and tea is this Saturday morning from 9 to 10:30 at the Moore Community Center on State Street. Anyone wishing to discuss matters privately with Grohoski will have the opportunity to do that from 10:30 to 11:30 following the group coffee event.
