Deer Isle Ambulance

 

(Deer Isle) – A new ambulance should arrive sometime in 2025 for Memorial Ambulance Corps in Deer Isle.  Philanthropist Donald Sussman made the purchase possible with a $400-thousand-dollar donation. The gift will purchase the vehicle and equip it with the devices necessary for all sorts of life saving emergencies.  Memorial Ambulance Officials say the purchase will allow them to use the current 2015 rig as a backup.  They had started a fund-raising campaign, and the Ellsworth American reports funds from that will be used to expand the ambulance association’s headquarters.

 

Tremont PFAS

 

(Tremont) – Traces of the forever chemicals known as PFAS have shown up in some wells in Tremont.  The Mt. Desert Islander reports the MDI Biological Laboratory tested 25-wells in Tremont, and 20 of the wells showed traces of the cancer related chemicals.  Four had test results that were higher than state standards.  The lab said it plans future testing as well and filtering is likely in order for the wells that have higher levels.

 

Former Cop Sentenced

(Rockland) – A former Stockton Springs police officer will spend 10-years in prison for sexually assaulting a teenager in the mid-coast.  The Midcoast Villager reports 35-year-old Christopher Hast of Searsport learned of his sentence in court in Rockland last week.  Hast was involved with a teen and arrested in 2021 in Rockland.  He had served as a police officer in Stockton Springs for six years prior to his arrest.

 

Probate Judge Suspended

 

(Ellsworth) – Maine’s Supreme Court has come down hard on the Probate Judge for Hancock County.  The high court ruled that William Blaisdell the 4th will be suspended for a year, with all but four months suspended for violating the code of judicial conduct.  Blaisdell failed to file several years worth of tax returns.  A lower court found him in contempt of court in a child support dispute with his former wife.  Under the order, Blaisdell will surrender $10-thousand dollars in pay he would have received for the 4-month suspension.

 

Auburn Fatal Fire

 

(Auburn) – Authorities believe a 60-year old man died in an explosion and fire in Auburn.  Firefighters responded to the call on Washington Street North shortly after 1:30 in the morning and found it ablaze.  Rescuers were unable to enter the building as the roof was already collapsing on arrival.  The body believed to be Steven Berry was recovered from the rubble after firefighters put the flames out.   Investigators say the damage was so extensive they cannot determine the cause of the.

 

Car / Motorcycle Crash

 

(Hancock) – A 70-year old Hancock woman was badly injured when the motorcycle sidecar she was riding in last week struck a deer in her hometown.  The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department reports Mary Nangle was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center by Lifeflight  following Thursday’s crash on Route 1.  Her husband, Richard, was driving the motorcycle and was uninjured.  Both were wearing helmets.
