Mike Dow can be heard each afternoon on Star 97.7. He is a familiar voice to Maine radio listeners and he’s been a fan of this radio station since the early days.
“I’ve listened often to Star 97.7 and I could not be more excited to join the team that powers Maine’s premiere community radio station,” Mike says. “No other station does more for its community than Star 97.7. Mark Osborne and Natalie Knox established that station mission and it’s a true honor to keep it going with Star 97.7’s owner and GM, Paul Dupuis and the Star team.”
Mike’s long and winding radio career began in Houlton, the Shiretown of Aroostook County. Mike’s grandmother, Gladys, was a local celebrity known as “the Sunshine Lady.” She received that delightful moniker from employees of the radio station in town for whom she would bake delicious treats that were delivered by young Mike. He mistook their enthusiasm over his arrival each time as a sign that radio was his destiny. Somehow things managed to work out for him.
Mike was part of The Mike & Mike Show (with Mike Elliott) for 15 years before starting his own show which was simulcast on stations in Bangor, Augusta and Bar Harbor. Mike has also been heard on radio stations in Old Town, Presque-Isle, Lincoln and Ellsworth.
Mike hired Paul Dupuis for his first full time radio job at WHOU in Houlton back in 1990. Paul hired Mike for his last full time radio job at Star 97.7.
Along with radio, music and animals are Mike’s greatest passions.
“I’m thrilled with the music we play on Star 97.7,” Mike says. “There’s so much variety from different eras, I totally get it when people say that we play the soundtrack of their life.”
Mike’s dog, Caesar, accompanies him in the studio each day, while rescue kitties Bowie, Brian and Misty listen at home.
Mike covered music for 10 years for The Maine Edge weekly.
Mike is a graduate of New England School of Broadcasting and a former adjunct professor for New England School of Communications. He volunteers for the Bangor Humane Society.
