Primary Election
(Undated) – Town clerks report very light absentee balloting as state primary day is tomorrow. Balloting runs from 8am to 8pm in most municipalities. In several communities the primary election coincides with local elections. Bar Harbor will elect a pair of town councilors from among six on the ballot. Ellsworth and the RSU 24 towns will decide on whether the adopted school budget should be validated as well as a couple of changes to the Ellsworth city charter. There are races on Republican ballots for both Congressional districts – the winner will appear on the November general election ballot to face Democrat Jared Golden. One Hancock County County Commissioner district will decide which Republican, Bill Clark or Earl Bierman, will appear on the November ballot to face Democrat Rebecca Wentworth who is unopposed.
(Undated) – Tomorrow is primary election day across the state, and interest is pretty low. Voters in the Republican Party have the only large scale races as both congressional districts have two candidates who want to appear on the November ballot to run against incumbent Democrats. Several towns are holding elections to coincide with the primary and all voters can cast ballots for those elections. Ellsworth will decide whether the school budget adopted a few weeks ago should be validated. Two charter changes are also on the local ballot. In Bar Harbor, six people are running to two seats on the town council. One Hancock County Commissioner seat has a primary – the Republican nomination for District One has Earl Bierman facing off against incumbent Bill Clark.

Deer Isle Bridge Walk
(Deer Isle) – A celebration is planned next Sunday on the bridge that connects Sedgwick and Deer Isle. The bridge will close to vehicular traffic between 1 and 2 pm as walkers traverse the bridge to mark the 85th anniversary of its official opening. Back in 1939 Maine’s then governor official cut the ribbon to the new suspension bridge. The Father’s Day event will have buses staged at either end of the bridge to bring walkers back to their cars when they finish traversing. The 1,088-foot span was similar in design to the famed Tacoma Narrows bridge which collapsed in the wind in Washington State. Extra cabling was added to the Hancock County bridge to give it more stability, but the bridge still sways slightly in high winds.
(Deer Isle) – One of Maine’s most famous bridges turns 85-years old this month. The 1,088 foot span that connects Deer Isle and Sedgwick opened June 19th in 1939 and a big celebration is planned next Sunday. The bridge will close to cars between 1 and 2 pm and walkers are encouraged to hike across the two lane bridge. Buses will take those walkers back to their cars. The bridge rises 85-feet above Eggemoggin Reach and is similar in design to two other bridges built in the 1930s that collapsed in high winds. That prompted stabilizing cables to be installed to prevent catastrophic swaying, but on windy days motorists can feel the bridge moving slightly.
