Union River Economic Study

 

(Ellsworth) – The huge hydroelectric dam on the Union River in Ellsworth has created Leonard Lake upstream, but a study is underway to see if there is a benefit to removing the dam and letting the river run free.  The Heart of Ellsworth, the City of Ellsworth, the Chamber of Commerce and three other organizations have banded together to gather economic data on the Union River’s future.  Several gatherings take place this weekend to gather data and opinions.  A final report is due in January.

 

DCP – Debt

 

 

(Ellsworth) – When the federal government and state housing authority sent more than $9-million dollars to Downeast Community Partners, the agency was supposed to use the funding for emergency rental assistance.  Now, the agency that serves Hancock and Washington Counties owes more than $1-point-7 million dollars back to the housing authority for using the funds for other payments.  The Ellsworth American reports DCP has suspended some relief programs and will sell off some properties that it owns to raise the money to pay back the misspent funds.

 

Castine Pier

 

(Castine) – Work has begun to upgrade the pier on Castine’s waterfront so the new Maine Maritime Academy training ship can tie up to the dock.  The Bangor Daily News reports the new pier will extend another 260-feet in the water, requiring hundreds of pilings to be installed.  Reed and Reed Construction is doing the work.  The new training ship is under construction in Philadelphia and will likely arrive next year.  The pier project won’t be complete until 2027.

 

Bangor Homicide

 

(Bangor) – Investigators say a Bangor woman was a victim of homicide. A co worker went to 39-year-old Virginia Cookson’s home on Larkin Street Wednesday morning after she didn’t show up for work and called police when he spotted her body inside the house.  Police released Cookson’s identity yesterday and the Medical Examiner’s Office determined her cause of death to be homicide.  So far no one has been charged.

 

Bucksport Hit & Run

 

(Bucksport) – A 91-year-old woman suffered injuries when a car struck her in Bucksport yesterday while crossing Main Street.  The driver left the scene, and police are looking for the vehicle.  The incident took place around 7-o’clock last night in front of McLeod’s Restaurant.  The victim’s name and extent of injuries were not released.

 

Bank Crash

 

(Rockland) – Police in Rockland say two people suffered injuries when a Jeep crashed into the TD Bank building on Union Street last night.  The injuries were not life threatening.  The crash occurred around 6:30 in the rain.  The Midcoast Villager reports another vehicle was also damaged in the mishap.  Police continue to investigate the cause.

 

Radio Station Sale

 

(Ellsworth) – We at Star 97.7 are part of the news this morning, as the station is under new ownership.  Yes, things sound exactly the same, as the new owner is morning show host Paul Dupuis.  He’s purchased the station from Stony Creek Broadcasting owner, retired announcer Mark Osborne who put the station on the air with its current format in 2005.  The station soon should be back on the air with full power as a new antenna and transmitter are being installed in Gouldsboro.
