Power Restoration Continues
(Lamoine) – Power should be back on for Versant customers by the end of the day today. The utility reported more than 7-thousand customers spent the night without electricity after 60-plus mile an hour winds battered Eastern Maine Wednesday night into Thursday morning. A brigade of bucket trucks worked throughout the day yesterday. Among the harder hit areas was High Street in Ellsworth. All but one set of traffic lights had been restored by last evening. Lamoine at one point saw the entire town without power, and the town office had no Internet and phone service into last night.
Ellsworth E-D Director Resigns
(Ellsworth) – Another department head change at Ellsworth City Hall as Economic Development Director Janna Richards has resigned. Janna Richards stepped down in late November according to the Ellsworth American. Richards served six years in her position and was the assistant planning director for the city before departing for jobs in Orono and Bar Harbor. The city is currently searching for a replacement.
The Grand Receives Generous Donation from T-Mobile
(Ellsworth) It was truly “A Christmas Story” last night at the Grand in Ellsworth, as T-Mobile presented Director Nick Turner with a check for $50,000 for a much needed sound upgrade. Turner said it was the generosity and support of the community that makes such gifts possible, and the pay-what-you-wish dress rehearsal that followed was one way of giving back. Interim Superintendent Named
(Deer Isle) –The school district serving Deer Isle, Stonington, Brooklin and Sedgwick has hired an interim superintendent of schools who is well familiar with the area. Mark Hurvitt is the retired superintendent for school union 93 which served the nearby Blue Hill area. Hurvitt takes over after embattled superintendent Daniel Ross resigned following a vote of no confidence by school personnel and suspensions by the local school committees.
Seawall Road Agreement
(SW Harbor) –Town officials in Southwest Harbor seem a bit hesitant about a plan to maintain Seawall Road offered up by the Maine DOT. That plan would see the town, the state and Acadia National Park each contribute a third of the cost if there is catastrophic damage to the road again. Last January, a pair of winter storm surges washed out significant parts of the road that runs through the park and connects Southwest Harbor to Tremont.
Fire Destroys Garage at Columbia Business
(Columbia) Fire destroyed a garage at Lovejoy Construction in Columbia Wednesday night. The family shared with Star 97.7, they were able to get three of the trucks out of the garage, and only one tractor trailer was lost. Multiple fire departments responded to the blaze, including Addison, Epping, Jonesport, Jonesboro, Cherryfield and Harrington No one was hurt; but the building is a total loss. It’s unclear what caused the fire.
Knox County Administrator
(Rockland) – County Commissioners in Knox County have hired a new administrator from within the walls of the county building. The Midcoast Villager reports Amber Christie has been offered the job that opened up when Richard Lovang was asked to resign after just a few months on the job. County officials say they’re negotiating a contract with Christie who has been doing the County Administrator’s job for several weeks without holding the title.
Waldo County Commissioner Dies
(Belfast) – One of the three county commissioners in Waldo County has passed away. The Bangor Daily News reports William Shorey of Searsport passed away yesterday morning. He had been a commissioner since 2009. No word yet on how he will be replaced.
