Kids Fall Through Ice
(Ellsworth) – Four young people took off from a group home near Graham Lake in Ellsworth yesterday, and three of them broke through ice. Firefighters from Ellsworth and Mariaville responded along with game wardens. They pulled one of the kids from the pond, and two others were able to get out of the water. All survived, and three of the four went to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
Holden Arrest
(Holden) – Police in Holden have arrested a 52-year old man who was supposed to be in prison when he allegedly attacked a woman. According to the department’s Facebook post, David MacKenzie is charged with Domestic Violence Assault, violating conditions of release and operating after suspension. He was convicted in August of hitting an 87-year old man from Brewer with his car and hiding the vehicle at his home in Holden. Police say he was supposed to be serving a 15-month suspended sentence and it’s unclear why he was not in prison after his sentencing in October.
Cement Truck Crash
(Orland) – No injuries are reported after a cement mixing truck rolled over on Route 1 in Orland. Police continue to investigate the incident that kept firefighters on scene for about 4-hours until a heavy duty tow truck could remove the big truck. It happened at the intersection with Front Ridge Road at about noon time on Friday.
MDI Hospital Expansion
(Bar Harbor) – The hospital in Bar Harbor is about to become a lot bigger. Mt. Desert Island Hospital will spend $42-million dollars to both update and expand the facility. The emergency room will double its patient capacity, and major renovations are planned to the lab, physical therapy, orthopedics and urology areas. The hospital also recently announced that it’s acquiring Acadia Family Center in Southwest Harbor. Much of the funding for the expansion comes from a congressional earmark.
Shrimp Fishing Banned Again
(Rockland) – For an 11th straight winter there will be no shrimp harvest off the coast of Maine. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has extended the shrimping moratorium for another year. Shrimp fishing in the once abundant waters in the North Atlantic ended in 2014 due to low stocks of the shellfish. The latest sampling period in 2023 showed no sign of a rebound for shrimp stock, and in fact was the lowest population in the past 10-years. There will be shrimp sampling in 2025 which will harvest 26-and-a-half tons of shrimp to study the population.
Drones-Maine
(Augusta) – Hysteria about drones spotted over New York and New Jersey has prompted social media reports of alleged mystery drones over Maine. The only problem is, no public safety agencies have received any reports. Augusta police say despite social media posts, they’ve not had any drone complaints from pilots at the city’s airport or from anyone else. Drones can be flown in Maine provided FAA regulations are followed.
