Protecting Your Home from Black Bears

(Maine)  Black Bears in the news this morning – and not just because of that talented men’s hockey team at U Maine!  The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says now is the time to think about preventing bears from coming to your yard.  They say between April 1st and November 1st, remove your bird feeders and rake up any unused seed from the ground.  Store garbage in a secure container, in a building or enclosed by an electric fence.  Clean those grills thoroughly after each use, and feed your pets inside, keeping pets, livestock, and pet food inside at night.  If you hate not feeding the birds, check out the MDIFW website for a bulletin on how to plant natural foods to attract birds but not bears.
