Appleton Fatal
(Appleton) – A 28-year old Minnesota motorcyclist is dead after crashing his bike in the Knox County Town of Appleton earlier this week. Deputies say James Limmer of Dundee Minnesota drifted off the Searsmont Road and slammed into a stand of trees. First responders found his body at the scene of the crash. Investigators say Limmer was an inexperienced biker.
Shooting Suspect Arrested
(Bradley) – Police have captured the man they called armed and dangerous following a shooting Monday afternoon in Glenburn. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department reports tips led them to the town of Bradley and a police dog tracked down 43-year old Brandon Harvey at about 9:30 last night. He is a person of interest in the shooting that left one person in serious condition. Deputies say they arrested Harvey without incident and took him to the hospital for injuries he sustained prior to the arrest.
Ellsworth Hotel
(Ellsworth) – Another hotel is popping up in Ellsworth. The Home 2 Suites by Hilton is going in next to Walgreens on High Street. The Witham family, which owns numerous hotels in Bar Harbor and Ellsworth used ceremonial shovels to break ground yesterday. The 83-room hotel will be four stories tall and construction should finish a year from July. Construction has been under way for several weeks.
Bucksport High school Gift
(Bucksport) – The CEO of International Paper has made another big donation to Bucksport High School. Andy Silvernail has donated another $250-thousand dollars to the school from which he graduated and the school in turn has named its new science wing after his family. Silvernail told WABI the Bucksport school system made a huge difference in his life, and he’s happy to give back to the community. He and his wife had previously donated a half million dollars to the school system.
Bar Harbor Town Council Election
(Bar Harbor) – Voters in Bar Harbor have returned an incumbent to the town council for 3-years after balloting yesterday. Former newspaper reporter Earl Brechlin was the top vote getter in a 3-way race for two three year council seats. He’s joined on the town council by Steven Boucher. Randell Sprague won the race to fill a vacant two-year term, and David Kief will serve for a year, elected to fill a vacancy.
Payne Trial
(Ellsworth) – A 69-year old Ellsworth man wounded by police more than two years ago will face a judge this week on charges he tried to shoot police officers. When Ellsworth police tried to serve an arrest warrant against Jeffrey Payne, he fired a shot at them. No officers were injured, but they returned fire, hitting Payne in the arm. He’s charged with attempted murder. The Bangor Daily News reports a judge will hear the case this week without a jury.
Rolled Coin Theft
(Dixfield) – Three Western Maine residents face charges after they allegedly broke into a variety store and stole cash, including rolled coins. WMTW reports the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department responded to a burglar alarm at the variety store at about quarter to three in the morning. Another store later reported 51-year old Melanie Kinney purchased items using rolled coin, and that led deputies to search her home where they found stolen items, tools used in the burglary, and a small amount of cocaine. The trio is charged with various crimes.
Missing Wheel
(Mt. Desert) – You would think you might notice if you were driving and one of your four tires was missing. Kinda makes for a rough ride. Bar Harbor Story reports a driver in Mt. Desert didn’t notice for two and a half miles. Police in Mt. Desert wrote a ticket to 33-year old Seamus Keefe of Hobe Sound Florida. His pickup truck went off Sargent Drive last Friday and hit coping stones, tearing a wheel from the truck. He kept going and finally stopped and called a tow truck. The company called the police department and Officer Judson Cake wrote the ticket for failing to report an accident by the quickest means possible. The truck damaged the pavement.
Red Flag Law Hearing
(Augusta) – Lawmakers will listen to public testimony this afternoon about a proposed red flag gun law, prior to voters deciding whether to approve the law in November. The hearing is set for 3-PM at the state house. The proposed law would allow family members to start the process of possibly removing guns from a person who may be a public safety threat. Republican lawmakers were upset that Democrats had initially balked at holding the public hearing. Unless the Legislature passes the law, it will go to a statewide vote in November.
