The Ellsworth Police Department will be holding its second Citizen Police Academy. The purpose of this program is to further citizen’s knowledge and understanding of the unique challenges which face the members of the law enforcement community every day.  It is our belief that through education and communication the academy will enhance our department’s ability to serve the community.  The program will provide an opportunity for the members of the police department to come together with the citizens and explore the issues and concerns which exist within the community.

It is not the intent of this program to train citizens to be police officers.

The citizen police academy is a series of 3 hour classes over the course of eight weeks (every Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm) which will cover material from all facets of law enforcement. The instruction will be provided by members of the Ellsworth Police Department as well as outside guest speakers. The material will be comprehensive and will require some hands on participation. The classes will consist of lecture, demonstrations, videos, and computer presentations.  A four hour ride along, with an Ellsworth Police Officer, will be available to class participants on a voluntary basis.

 Who may apply?

Any interested citizen is encouraged to apply. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to attend, have no prior felony convictions and have no prior misdemeanor convictions within the previous 5 years. Applicants must pass a background check conducted by the Ellsworth Police Department prior to approval.  Applications must be turned into the Ellsworth Police Department no later than 04/13/2015.

The sessions will be held every Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm for a period of 8 weeks starting on Wednesday April 22 2015.

Participants are asked to attend as many classes as possible. The classes will be held in the Ellsworth City Hall building. Interested citizens may pick up an application at the Ellsworth Police Department at 1 City Hall Plaza, or may access the application on line via the City of Ellsworth Web site or the Ellsworth Police Department’s Facebook page.
