The public is invited to a free viewing of ALIVE INSIDE, a documentary about using music to treat dementia, at the Burnt Cove Church Community Center, 17 Airport Road, Stonington, on Thursday, August 20, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. Thriving in Place Downeast and the Island Nursing Home, with support from Opera House Arts, are sponsoring the free event as part of the Camden International Film Festival’s 2015 Aging in Maine screening tour.

ALIVE INSIDE has been described as “a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music.”  ALIVE INSIDE won the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Harry Rodriguez from the Island Nursing Home, which has just started its own program to provide music therapy for residents with dementia.  Rodriguez has been the Nursing Home’s Activity Director for almost 18 years. After the discussion, he hopes to collect gently used iPods so he can provide personalized playlists to residents with dementia. Each playlist will comprise that resident’s favorite songs from long ago.

The Aging in Maine screening tour brings award-winning documentary films and discussions to more than twenty different communities between April and August 2015. The tour is the second part of the CIFF’s second annual Engagement Summit: Aging in Maine, which connects nonprofit leaders, healthcare professionals and community leaders from across the state to harness the power of documentary film to spark a public, intergenerational dialogue about the challenges and opportunities of Maine’s aging demographics.

“Thriving in Place Downeast is in its first year of a 3-year, multi-agency collaboration to improve the network of care for elderly and chronically ill members of our community so that they can thrive in their own homes as they age,” said Janet Lewis, Executive Director of Healthy Peninsula, the coordinating agency for Thriving in Place Downeast.  “The Aging in Maine tour provides a perfect opportunity to approach our mission and reach our community through the screening and discussion of significant and thought-provoking documentary films.”

The Camden International Film Festival’s Engagement Summit: Aging in Maine is made possible by generous support from the Fledgling Fund, Camden National Bank, the Pen Bay Healthcare Foundation and the Bingham Program. The Aging in Maine screening tour is sponsored by Camden National Bank.  For additional information on the Aging in Maine screening tour and Camden International Film Festival:  Caroline von Kuhn, Managing Director, [email protected], 917-355-6310.

Thriving in Place Downeast is a collaboration of Healthy Peninsula and 10 community health agencies working together to find creative solutions for health and wellness. Thriving in Place Downeast is funded by a three-year grant from the Maine Health Access Foundation.  The ALIVE INSIDE screening is also made possible by generous support from Opera House Arts, which uses the performing arts to foster and promote excellence in all the ways we perform our lives

The Island Nursing Home and Care Center in Deer Isle is one of only five standalone nonprofit nursing homes in the state and has received the highest possible rating of five stars from the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services. The nursing home’s approach to elderly care focuses on ensuring a high quality of life in a home-like atmosphere through personalized care and comfort at our facility.
