Law enforcement and the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to help community members get rid of unwanted medications in a safe way.

April 25th is Earth day. It’s the same day the Ellsworth Police Department, the Hancock County Sherriff’s Department and the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Drug Take- Back Day from 9:00- 1:00 at the Chamber parking lot at 163 High Street. There are environmental concerns about the impact of flushing drugs down the toilet or throwing them away in landfills. Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane says “We are wholeheartedly behind this. It’s a chance for people to bring in their unused, expired and unwanted prescription medications and dispose of them properly. “  The Maine Sheriff’s Association has agreed to pick up the medications and incinerate them. There is another benefit to turning in medications that day.  Ellsworth Police Chief Chris Coleman says “Keeping this type of medication in our medicine cabinet makes us potential targets for crime. I feel it’s important that we work together to get unused, unwanted or expired prescription medication disposed of properly.” “I am very excited to be partnering with our local law enforcement on this project,” says Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Susan Farley. “It’s not what you typically think of when you talk about the Chamber but part of our mission is to enhance the quality of life in our local communities. We are fortunate to have such special cities and small towns in our area. All of us need to work together on projects like these to make them even better places to live and work.”

This event evolved through a partnership. If you are unable to turn in your prescription medications that day check with your local police department. Many of them are drop off locations throughout the year.
