With stories of drug related break- ins making the news, local law enforcement and the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to hold a second Drug Take- Back Day.
The first event held last April was a huge success so the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, the Ellsworth Police Department and the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce have decided to do it again on September 26th from 9:-1:00 at the Chamber Parking lot at 163 High Street. Chief Chris Coleman says “the Ellsworth Police department is proud of its commitment to taking unused, unwanted or expired prescription medication out of circulation.” “By giving us your unused, expired or unwanted medication at these Take -Back Days it makes your home safer and allows us to dispose of these medications in an environmentally friendly way , “ says Sheriff Scott Kane. Flushing them down the toilet has the potential of letting them end up in our water supply and they can leach into groundwater if they are thrown in landfills. The Maine Sheriffs Association has agreed to once again pick up the medications and incinerate them. Last April 1,067 pounds of medications were collected from residents of Hancock County. “We hope to exceed that this time,” says Chamber Executive Director Susan Farley. “It’s one more way to make our communities a better place to live, work and play and it’s simply the right thing to do.”
This event evolved through a partnership. If you are unable to turn in your prescription medications that day check with your local police department. Many of them are drop off locations throughout the year.
