INH Virtual Dementia Tour
- This event has passed.
November 11, 2015
The public is invited to experience Island Nursing Home’s next “Virtual Dementia Tour”—a simulation of what it’s like to live with dementia—on November 11, 12 and 13.
The free, 20-minute experience uses technology to temporarily impair participants’ physical and sensory abilities, enabling them to “walk in the shoes” of a person with dementia as they try to perform some everyday tasks.
Caregivers, family members and friends of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia find it especially helpful. The nursing home requires all new employees to take the tour so as to ensure that they have as much understanding as possible of what some of the residents live through every day.
“As soon as I completed the tour last year I wished that I had taken it 20 years earlier,” said Bob Lasky, an INH board member. “The knowledge I gained would have helped me to understand my mother, and her Alzheimer’s, so much better.”
The tour is available, by appointment, at 587 North Deer Isle Road:
- on Wednesday, November 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.;
- on Thursday, November 12, from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.; and
- on Friday November 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To book your preferred time slot, please call Joan Bothwell at 348-6517 or [email protected].
Offering the Virtual Dementia Tour to the public is just one of the ways in which INH strives to nurture community relationships. INH is one of only five nonprofit standalone nursing homes in Maine. It is committed to providing the highest level of innovative and quality health care to an aging population while maintaining our core values of care, compassion and service.
