The Machias Community Christmas celebration, sponsored by Machias Savings Bank, will kick off on Sunday, Nov. 29, with the Voice of Down East talent competition.
The event will be held from 2-4 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at the University of Maine at Machias. The age groups are 5-11, 12-16 and 17 and older. The top three performers of each age group will receive $100 (1st), $50 (2nd), $25 (3rd). To register for the competition or for more information, contact Derrick Dyer, 255.9256, or Melissa Moffett, 255.9266.
From 3-5 p.m. Friday, December 4, Santa will be at the Lee Pellon Center along with plenty of elves helping children with crafts. The Christmas parade will begin from Rose Gaffney Elementary School at 6 p.m. and proceed to Varney’s Insurance, across the dike. Anyone interested in signing up a marching group or entering a float in the parade should contact Miranda Smith at 271.0338. There are prizes of $300, $200 and $100 for the top three floats.
Immediately following the parade, Town Manager Christina Therrian will flip the switch to light the community tree in front of Station 1898 and carol singing will be held. Local churches and schools are urged to send their choral groups or choirs to the event. The winners of the Voice of Downeast will also perform. Call the Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce at 255.4402 to sign up a singing group.
