MDI Hospital & McKay’s Public House to Hold First Responders BBQ

Mount Desert Island Hospital and McKay’s Public House will once again come together to honor our community’s first responders on September 11 with a free First Responders Barbeque at the Bar Harbor Fire Station from 11:30-1:00 p.m. with live music by local guitarist Bob Bowman. All first responders, search and rescue, EMS, fire and police personnel are welcome to attend.

MDI Hospital and McKay’s first came together to honor first responders last year at the Somesville Fire Station following the Cottage Street fire that leveled one local restaurant and damaged several other Cottage Street buildings, including several apartments, displacing many Cottage Street residents. In addition to the barbeque, MDI Hospital offered those displaced by the fire free vouchers for meals in their cafeteria.

The MDI Hospital Organization has hosted an event for all Island emergency service personnel since September 11, 2001. Last year, Brian Smith of McKay’s stepped up to help increase the reach and scope of the event, which was attended by more than 120 people. “Our first responders take care of us when we need it most. This event gives us a chance to take care of them,” said hospital spokesperson Oka Hutchins. “We are so grateful to Brian and McKay’s for partnering with us to honor our community’s first responders.”
