Students at Narraguagus High School will give 2 performances of a spring show, presented café-theater style, on Saturday, May 2. Called “Time-Wise: A Musical Journey,” it features songs of Jacques Brel, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and the team of Kander & Ebb. The matinee is scheduled for 2 PM; evening performance at 7 PM. Tickets are $6 in advance and $7 at the door. For students/seniors they’re $4 in advance and $5 at the door.
The production is directed by Danielle Woerner, Artistic Director of the new Sunrise County Arts Institute (SCAI) in Milbridge, with musical accompaniment by pianist Joanna DeSchiffart plus students in the cast, and movement direction by Jennifer Kempthorne. It’s a cooperative venture between SCAI and the high school.
“Since this is the school’s first theatrical production in 3 years, we’ve kept it simple and flexible,” says Woerner. “Plus, we’re working around, and in cooperation with, athletic events involving several cast members. So these performances are a work-in-progress, a foretaste of what we hope to develop as an ongoing drama program at the school beginning next fall.”
“Time-Wise” takes its audience on a journey in song through the past century: major events, and the ups and downs of friendship and romance. With simple staging and costumes, the cast members bring elements of each era alive. The intimate stage setting in the school’s cafeteria will bring the audience—seated at tables café-style—into the action. The show will be one act, without intermission, running about an hour.
Light refreshments will be available for purchase to enjoy during the performances. Since seating is limited, reservations are recommended. Call the school office at (207) 483-2746 for reservations and more information.
Narraguagus High School is at 1611 Main Street (Rt.1) in Harrington.
