The Eastport Arts Center will host a two-day fiber arts workshop with Susan and Sasha Lehnen on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29, from 10-2pm each day. This workshop will focus on a cloth surface design technique called Shibori, which has origins in Asia and Africa. Called Shibori in Japan, Tritik and Plangi in India, and Adire Eleko in Nigeria, the principles of the bound resist method are simple; areas of cloth are tied, folded or stitched and drawn tight, then immersed in dye. When bindings are removed, the reserved areas form a white pattern against the dyed background. Individual experimentation with these methods allows for much innovation and sophistication. The workshop will also explore Itajime Shibori, a folding and dying technique. Participants must be at least 10 years old, and is $60 for both days, plus an $8 materials fee. Pre-registration is required. Call 853-4650 or email [email protected] to register.
