Surry Historical Society Classes

The Surry Historical Society will present three one-hour courses in town lore on successive Monday evenings on Oct 7, 14 and 21. Each class begins at 7 pm at the Old Surry Village School at the corner of Toddy Pond Road and Route 172 in Surry. Classes are free, informal and open to all. Refreshments will be served.
The topic schedule is as follows:
• Oct. 7 – Indigenous people; European intrusion; first settlers; town incorporation 1803.
• Oct. 14 – Surry/Ellsworth border dispute 1807; War of 1812; statehood 1820; tiger hunt 1850;-Civil War 1861; Gold Rush 1849; Surry mining; sea tragedy 1877.
• Oct. 21 – Centennial 1903; schools and churches; wharfs and shipyards; Surry Theater; Arbutus Grange.
