BANGOR – Katahdin Woods & Waters Recreation Area, a project of Elliotsville Plantation, will hold a telephone town hall for Mainers to discuss a proposal to create a new national park and national recreation area east of Baxter State Park.
Participants in the call will have an opportunity to ask questions during the moderated event.
“For more than two years, I’ve been talking to people in the Katahdin region about the incredible potential a new national park and national recreation area could have for the area. This is a new proposal, built on that input,” said Lucas St. Clair, the president of the board of Elliotsville Plantation Inc., a private foundation that has proposed creating the park and recreation area. “Support for the idea is growing. People are excited about the investment and the creation of between 400 and 1,000 new jobs. We want to give thousands of people the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the specifics of the park and recreation area.”
The proposal for a national park and national recreation area has developed after listening to the concerns and questions of people living in the region. The park would be about 75,000 acres, with an adjacent 75,000-acre recreation area. The recreation area would permanently protect important snowmobile and hunting access. In addition, there would be no changes in clean air standards that could impact manufacturing in the region, including Millinocket and East Millinocket.
