Woodlawn is pleased to announce its next presentation in its Woodlawn Over Coffee series, The Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations -the history of Woodlawn’s governing board on
Wednesday, March 25thth, 10 – 11 am at the Black House in Ellsworth.
The Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations, Woodlawn’s governing board was formed in 1901 by concerned citizens in response to extensive lumbering and the increase in private land ownership in Hancock County. They were very successful in preserving thousands of acres on Mount Desert Island, and then donated their holdings to the Federal government in 1916 which formed the core of Acadia National Park. In 1929 they accepted Woodlawn from the bequest of George Nixon Black, Jr. and have continued to maintain and govern it for public use ever since. The talk will be given by Woodlawn’s executive director, Joshua Torrance.
The series continues in coming weeks with: If the Black House Were For Sale, a light-hearted broker’s presentation by local realtor, Teri Sargent Smith on April 1st, Think Programs! an overview of Woodlawn’s 2015 program calendar on April 8th, and on April 11th, Getting Ready for Guests, an overview of what it takes to open the Black House for the season.
The public is invited to join the discussion held from 10- 11 am. Cake and coffee will be available at each session. Woodlawn Over Coffee is free of charge, however donations are welcomed. Space is limited, so call 667-8671 or e-mail [email protected] to reserve a seat or additional information.
