Woodlawn Over Coffee – Getting Ready for Guests: Opening the Black House for the Season

April 15, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

On Wednesday, April 15th, Woodlawn will present the final session of its informal talk and discussion series, Woodlawn Over Coffee, Getting Ready for Guests: Opening the Black House for the Season.

Opening the Black House for the summer season involves many of the same chores that everyone does when guests are coming to visit. The big difference is, what is routine in a modern home requires special techniques and protocols in a historic home. According to Woodlawn’s executive director, Joshua Torrance, “What many will find surprising is that there are very specific techniques and protocols for vacuuming, dusting and cleaning items that are more than 150 years old. We thought it would be fun to have the public in to see the staff in action as we prepare for opening day on May 1st.”   Participants will even be given the chance to lend a hand in the polishing of the silver.

Cake and coffee will be available at the session. Woodlawn Over Coffee is free of charge, however donations are appreciated. Space is limited, so call 667-8671 or e-mail [email protected] to reserve a seat or additional information.

Woodlawn is an educational, cultural, and recreational treasure for the people of Downeast Maine. The main house is open for tours May 1 – October 31 and December 1-23. The public park is open year round, sunrise to sunset. 19 Black House Drive (off of the Surry Road-Rt. 172), Ellsworth, ME. For more information visit www.woodlawnmuseum.org.
